On the 18th of June, all the Students and Interns took the whole day for a field trip. We went to the DC area and made two stops. If you know me personally, chances are you know my luck (um, lack thereof…) in the ‘car sick’ department. So I can’t really give you many interesting accounts of the trip down. I prefer to block it all out of my memory… haha

Our first stop was at the Hillwood Estate, Museum, and Garden. A very cool place that I’d never heard of. It was also rather tucked away, so I’m glad we went as a group. Thats a huge perk of being in the Longwood intern program because we go to places that I wouldn’t normally know about, let alone get to.

The Hillwood website is HERE if you’d like to check that out.

As I wasn’t feeling that well, I had a really hard time focusing on our guide. Which is unfortunate. But I certainly know more about it now than when we first arrived there.

The founder of Hillwood was Marjorie Merriweather Post. The actual estate was built in the 1920′s, but she didn’t purchase it until 1955. I actually didn’t spend much time in the home itself, I was much too busy attempting to steal much needed fresh air, haha.

The gardens are kept to be a close working model of how Mrs. Post kept them during her time there. The overall design of the gardens was done by Willard Gebhart in 1926, but upon Mrs. Posts purchase of the estate, she made changes to reflect her taste.

And here are some more photos of the gardens… Unfortunately it was an overcast day, but with the spring/summer we’ve been having, I’m pretty sure we were all just thankful it wasn’t torrential downpour!!! haha
