- The plants name is rather amusing to me. Thalictrum is simply the Greek word for this plant. But the species name, thalictroides, means that it resembles Thalictrum; which is its Genus name. So… what can we learn about the plant from its name? It looks like itself…

Common Name: Rue Anemone

Region of Origin/Nativity: North America, specifically the U.S.

Characteristics: This small slow growing perennial has tuberous roots and only grows around 6″ tall. Each leaf is compound . The flowers are usually white, saucer shaped, and have between 5 and 10 sepals (even though they may look like petals). Fruit are clustered achenes and are ribbed. Stems are usually green, but can sometimes have a reddish color.

Life Span: Herbaceous Perennial

Hardiness: USDA Zones 4 to 8

Cultivation requirements: This plant has a natural habitat of either woodlands or rocky shaded gardens. So they prefer partial shade conditions and like soil with organic matter that is well drained. It likes to naturalize and avoid transplanting unless you need to.

Typical Pests, Diseases, associated problems: No real problems.

Propagation Method: By seed or division in early spring.
